In this case study, the objective was to deliver a comprehensive analysis of the Smart Irrigation market for a proposed client. The client aimed to raise capital for an IoT-enabled smart irrigation provider, offering a proprietary platform of hardware and software to help landscaped real estate operators.
The deliverable required a one-page report on the competitive landscape in the Smart Irrigation market, highlighting key players and potential strategic acquirers or investors. My goal was to showcase my skill set in researching and analyzing an industry's competitive landscape and identifying prospective targets for analysis.
Result

I conducted an analysis and identified five potential strategic acquirers or investors, evaluating potential synergies, integration opportunities, and strategic fit for each company. These organizations included Lindsay Corporation, a global manufacturer and distributor of irrigation and infrastructure solutions; The Toro Company, a provider of lawn mowers, snow blowers, and irrigation system supplies for various sectors; Banyan Water Inc., specializing in cloud-based software platforms for water savings in commercial real estate; Rachio Inc., a developer and provider of smart sprinkler control systems for residential applications; and Digi International Inc., an innovator in wireless communication and IoT solutions across numerous industries.

My findings demonstrated that these companies shared commonalities, such as unrealized synergies, U.S.-based operations, and a propensity for horizontal or vertical integration, which are essential factors for a successful acquisition. They exhibited significant revenue metrics and valuation multiples, signifying their ability to provide capital and support the proposed acquisition. By assessing each company's strategic fit within the context of the Smart Irrigation market, I furnished valuable insights into the competitive landscape and pinpointed key players for the potential acquisition opportunity.
